RWI (Read Write Inc)
At St. James, we teach children to read and write using a synthetic phonic programme called Read Write Inc. Our phonic teaching is taught daily in Early Years, Year 1 and Year 2. However, if any children need extra support in Key Stage they will continue to stay on the programme.
We teach the children how to read by learning:
- individual sounds these are called Set 1 sounds.
- groups of letters which go together to make a sound. These are called Set 2 and Set 3 sounds. We call these 'special friends'
Children are taught to blend sounds together to read words. They are taught daily in same ability groups and are assessed every four to six weeks to ensure they are making good progress.
